The Seasons Are Changing, is Your Skincare?

Now that fall is here, there are a lot of changes that I make to some of my usual routines. Especially in my skincare.

When it comes to taking care of my skin, that’s something that I’m really passionate about.

Learning about my skin and what works well for it is something that has taken me years to figure out. Even today, there are still some things that I’m still learning.

One of the first steps to figuring out your skincare routine is to figure out what type of skin you have. Is it combination, sensitive, dry, oily? This will help you determine what ingredients you need in your skincare products.

Now that fall is here, I find that it’s really important to pay attention to your skin and what it needs. Colder weather means that, for some of us, our skin get’s really dry and may need an extra bit of moisture.

I have combination skin which means that my T-Zone (my forehead, nose, and chin area) have a lot of oil but my cheek areas are not as problematic. Having combination skin means that I’m prone breakouts, certain areas of my face are more sensitive and others aren’t. It also means that finding good skincare products is something that takes a lot of time because some products irritate my skin, others make it too oily, and others… well you get the idea. Lol.

A product that I have used that works really well for those of us with combination skin, and with any type of skin really, is the Foreo. Foreo is a Swedish based company and they make a lot of, “skincare technology, ” I like to call it. They’re kind of like those spin brushes you use to deep clean your skin. The great thing about Foreo is that they have devices for combination skin, sensitive skin, and more. I also love the fun colors they come in. They’re super cute and come with chargers and everything. There is also a device for everyone! And you get a student discount when you sign up and verify your college email. So, that’s a big plus for me!

I got introduced to Foreo about two years ago. Being in Cosmetology School meant that I was around a lot of chemicals that got sucked into my pores, and therefore caused a lot of breakouts. So, the Foreo was something that I really liked because it helped clean my skin really well. After being around things like bleach, hairspray, and other things that waft into the air at a beauty salon, I really needed it. Hence the combination skin and sensitivity to certain products.

I know that some of us prefer to use hands, and honestly, I do too, but sometimes your pores really need a deep clean.

Speaking of pores, clogged ones cause breakouts too. One tip that I have is to take a hot shower and then clean your skin. The steam helps to open your pores, this way when you apply your cleanser, you’re really doing a good clean. After using your cleanser, you want to rinse with cool/ cold water to close your pores back up. Closing your pores helps things like bacteria stay out. My favorite cleanser is by Mario Badescu. It’s an Acne Facial cleanser and there is also an Acne kit that it comes in. All of the products are really gentle. So they’re perfect for sensitive skin and great for controlling oil. I really recommend this for anyone that struggles with frequent breakouts and skin that seems to never want to cooperate. Haha.

It’s really important to know what causes your breakouts too. It can be certain foods, hormones, a skin product, perfume/cologne… anything. So it’s really important to look at when your breakouts occur and start canceling things out to see what causes them.

After cleanser, you may want to exfoliate. Exfoliation is good for getting rid of dead skin cells and brightening your skin. It gives you a nice glow.

Dermalogica has an excellent Daily Microfoliant. Especially for some with sensitive skin, the harsher exfoliants may cause sensitivity. The Daily Microfoliant is really soft and perfect for “daily” use.

After exfoliation, I follow with a toner. The purpose of a Toner is to even out skin tone, and it also helps to shrink pores. I find that toner also helps prevent breakouts for me.

After a toner, you may want to follow with any skin oils that you may use. I love Rosehip Oil because it helps reduce acne scars. You can really see a difference the next morning. Finally, you want a really good moisturizer.

Locking in moisture is important. Especially in the colder months. You want to make sure that your skin gets all that it needs.

Face masks are also really good to do, two-three times a week. Brands like Queen Helene and Freeman have good face masks that have a variety of uses for different skin types.

Your morning and night skincare routine is also not going to be the same because you may not need things like skincare oils during the day. But you’re definitely going to want a moisturizer with SPF in it to protect your skin from the sun. Even while you’re indoors, SPF is important because windows mean that the sun’s rays still get indoors and you want to be protected at all times. There are eye creams for puffiness, pimple creams… the list goes on when it comes to skincare.

For me, skincare is kind of like therapy. I think we all have that one thing that we do that is relaxing and for me, that’s taking care of my skin. It definitely takes some learning and frustration but it’s also pretty amazing when you find something that works well for you.

I hope this post helped you learn a little bit more about your skin and how to care for it. I also hope you enjoyed it!
